What do you get when you combine porn stars, Master’s degrees, Youtube, and a love of history? You get a brand new, hilariously potty-mouthed series of videos about some historical women who were seriously badass.

Enter Ela Darling and Sovereign Syre, a couple of adult film stars who have an MA in library sciences and an MFA in creative writing, respectively. Their research and writing skills are put to excellent use here, as they undertake the very feminist project of bringing women’s history to the forefront and making it accessible. And by women’s history, I don’t mean it in a #solidarityisforwhitewomen way - I mean all women.

The new series comes sponsored by Wisecrack, home of Thug Notes, where you can learn your ass off about literature from Sparky Sweets, PhD.

It’s a fascinating and growing trend in public digital outreach for humanities subjects. With Boss Bitches of History and Thug Notes, what’s happening is a response to people’s desire to learn things about great books or women in history that just aren’t being handled in our schools in a way that’s accessible.

High school English in America, aside from maybe AP Literature in some schools, isn’t a very fun time and it can kill any interest a young person might have in poetry or analyzing stories. History is treated like a series of dates and events to memorize, and it’s mostly about men starting wars and signing peace treaties.

Projects like Thug Notes and Boss Bitches of History are meeting young people where they are with an entertaining take on learning. The projects speak their language and help them see how there’s more than just a story, or more than just wars and dates to history but a narrative as well. History is a story, and Boss Bitches of History uses that approach very well in its first two entries.

The first two entries of Boss Bitches of History are about Cleopatra and Marie-Josèphe dite Angélique. Who’s next? I don’t know, but I’m looking forward to find out.
